    More than 5.5 crore Income Tax Returns (ITRs) have been filed for Assessment Year (AY) 2026-27, according to an update released by the Income Tax Department on Friday, July 31, 2026.

    Filing activity saw a massive surge in the final stretch, with over 42 lakh returns submitted on July 30 alone as taxpayers rushed to meet the deadline.

    Key Highlights

    • Total Submissions: Over 5.5 crore ITRs filed for AY 2026-27 so far.

    • Single-Day Surge: 42+ lakh returns filed on July 30.

    • Deadline: July 31, 2026, for non-audit individual taxpayers and HUFs (ITR-1 and ITR-2).

    Form Eligibility Breakdown

    Form Type Eligible Taxpayers Key Criteria & Income Limits
    ITR-1 (Sahaj) Resident Individuals

    • Annual income up to ₹50 lakh.


    • Income sources: Salary, one house property, and other sources.


    • Agricultural income up to ₹5,000 per year.

    ITR-2 Individuals & HUFs

    • Income from capital gains, multiple house properties, or foreign assets.


    • Not eligible for individuals with profits or gains from business/profession.

    Official Reminder

    Reminding taxpayers to complete their filings before the deadline closes at midnight on July 31, the Income Tax Department posted an update on X (formerly Twitter):

    “Less than 24 hours to go! Over 5.5 crore ITRs have already been filed for AY 2026-27 (with over 42 lakh filed on July 30 alone!). File now, File calmly!”
