Samsung Electronics is reportedly preparing to unveil a massive shareholder return program exceeding 100 trillion won ($71.75 billion) later this month, marking one of the largest corporate capital return plans in Asian market history. Driven by an unprecedented surge in demand for artificial intelligence memory chips, the South Korean tech giant plans to distribute a substantial portion of its record cash reserves back to investors.

    Cash Distribution Framework

According to industry sources, Samsung’s board of directors will convene at the end of August to formally approve the package. The strategy hinges on returning half of the company’s operating surplus to shareholders:

    • Free Cash Flow Allocation: Samsung will dedicate 50% of its free cash flow (FCF) toward the return program.

    • Special Dividends: The package will feature a substantial special cash dividend component alongside potential share buybacks.

    • AI Supercycle Support: The aggressive payout comes as global hyperscalers expand AI infrastructure spending, driving record profitability in high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and enterprise storage segments.

    The Semiconductor Capital Return Battle

Samsung’s disclosure follows a landmark announcement from key rival SK Hynix, which unveiled a 40 trillion won ($28.6 billion) share repurchase and cancellation program just a day prior. SK Hynix also raised its payout floor to over 50% of free cash flow through 2027, sparking a sharp rebound in semiconductor equities across Asian exchanges.

    Investor Outlook

The multi-billion-dollar commitments from South Korea’s top chipmakers underscore the staggering cash generation capability of the ongoing AI hardware boom. Investors will focus on Samsung’s late-August board meeting for exact details regarding dividend distribution schedules, buyback timelines, and long-term capital allocation targets.
