Planning Ayurvedic Treatment? What to Check in Your Health Insurance Policy First

Navigating AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy) claims in India requires verifying specific criteria before treatment begins. Under IRDAI mandates, insurers must cover AYUSH treatments at par with allopathic (modern medicine) care using the policy’s full base sum insured without separate sub-limits, provided key conditions are met.

Key Factors for AYUSH Claim Approval

    1. Hospital Accreditation & Registration

    • Claims are only approved if treatment occurs at a central/state government hospital or an NABH (National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers) / QCI (Quality Council of India) accredited facility.

    • Local, non-accredited clinics, wellness retreats, or resorts are excluded from coverage.

    • The facility must typically have at least 5 active inpatient beds and a qualified, registered AYUSH practitioner on site.

    2. Inpatient Hospitalization (24+ Hours)

    • Standard policies require a minimum 24-hour continuous inpatient admission.

    • Exceptions: Specific day-care procedures (like prescribed Panchakarma therapies: Virechana or Basti) are covered if explicitly listed in your policy schedule.

    • Outpatient visits (OPD consultations) or standalone pharmacy purchases are not covered unless you have an active OPD rider.

    3. Medical Necessity vs. Wellness

    • The treatment must be prescribed by a registered practitioner to cure or manage a diagnosed medical condition (e.g., severe arthritis, chronic digestive issues, or neurological disorders).

    • Rejuvenation, beauty, spa, or preventive wellness packages are strictly excluded.

    4. Cashless Network & Pre-Authorisation

    • Insurers process cashless AYUSH claims through accredited network hospitals (often via the National Health Claims Exchange – NHCX platform).

    • Submit a pre-authorisation request at least 48 hours prior to a planned admission to avoid out-of-pocket disputes.

    Step-by-Step Checklist Before Admission

    1. Verify Hospital Accreditation: Ask the center for their NABH certificate and ROHINI (Registry of Hospitals in Network of Insurance) ID.

    2. Review Policy Terms: Ensure your plan reflects the updated IRDAI guidelines without outdated sub-limit caps.

    3. Collect Complete Records: Ensure the doctor logs daily treatment notes, specific therapy schedules, diagnostic reports, and detailed bill breakdowns.

    4. Obtain Doctor’s Justification: Request a written medical justification from the attending physician explaining why inpatient Ayurvedic care is required over outpatient care.
