Bank of Korea Holds Interest Rates at 3% After Back-to-Back Hikes

The Bank of Korea (BOK) voted unanimously to keep its benchmark 7-day repurchase rate unchanged at 3.00%, opting for a wait-and-see approach following consecutive 25-basis-point hikes in July and August.

    Key Highlights from the Decision:

    • The Pause: After lifting rates from 2.5% to 3.0% as a preemptive measure against inflationary pressures, policymakers decided to take a breather to evaluate the impact of higher borrowing costs on the domestic economy, household debt, and the foreign exchange market.

    • Economic Outlook & Forecasts:

      • Headline inflation cooled slightly to 2.9% in September but remains above the central bank’s 2% target.

      • The BOK projects annual inflation and core inflation at roughly 2.7% and 2.5% respectively, with stronger-than-expected overall economic growth driven largely by robust global AI-related semiconductor exports.

    • Risk Factors: The central bank cited ongoing concerns surrounding household debt, imbalances in the Seoul housing market, geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, and potential slowdowns in tech/semiconductor profits.

    • Future Outlook: While rates were held steady, the central bank maintained a cautious, slightly hawkish stance, leaving the door open for further tightening if inflation and financial stability risks dictate future action.
