Elon Musk Halts X’s New Regional Payout Policy Following Creator Backlash

In a sudden reversal, Elon Musk has paused a controversial update to X’s revenue-sharing model just hours after it was announced by the platform’s Head of Product, Nikita Bier. The decision follows a wave of criticism from global creators who argued the policy would unfairly penalize those with international audiences.

The Proposed Change: “Home Region” Weighting

The update, shared by Bier earlier on March 25, 2026, aimed to overhaul how creators earn money from impressions. The core of the strategy was to:

    • Prioritize Local Resonance: Give more financial weight to views coming from a creator’s own country, neighboring regions, and those who speak the same language.
    • Encourage Hyper-Local Content: Bier argued the move would make X a “richer community” by incentivizing relevant local posts rather than generic global content.

    The Creator Uproar

The announcement immediately triggered a massive backlash. Creators pointed out several fundamental flaws in the logic:

    • Global Niche Communities: Many creators (in tech, art, or gaming) live in one country but serve a primary audience in another (e.g., a European artist with a 70% US-based following).
    • Accusations of Political Filtering: Some users alleged the move was a veiled attempt to stifle international commentary on American politics.
    • Impact on Non-Political Content: Critics noted that global content types—like science, entertainment, and education—do not follow geographical borders, and the policy would “ruin the nature of X.”

    Musk’s Intervention

Elon Musk personally stepped in after a user pointed out that global content exists far beyond the realm of politics. Musk responded with “Good point” and shortly after confirmed: “We will pause moving forward with this until further consideration.”

    Who is Nikita Bier?

Nikita Bier, who joined X as Head of Product in June 2025, is a well-known figure in the social media space:

    • Background: He is the founder of viral apps like tbh and Gas, and previously served as a product manager at Meta.
    • Recent Changes at X: Under his leadership, X has integrated Grok AI more deeply into the algorithm and started beta testing the return of the dislike button.
    • Stance on “Engagement Farming”: Bier has been aggressive in cleaning up the platform, recently implementing 90-day suspensions for creators who post undisclosed AI-generated images to farm engagement.

Current Status of X Revenue Sharing

For now, the revenue-sharing model remains in its previous state. The “pause” suggests that while the leadership wants to incentivize local communities, they have yet to find a way to do so without alienating their most successful global voices.
