Tensions Flare at Kolkata’s New Market After Election-Linked ‘Bulldozer Action’

Central Kolkata witnessed a night of high drama and panic as bulldozers were deployed to demolish a structure near the historic Hogg Market (New Market) late Tuesday night. The incident has quickly become a political flashpoint following the 2026 West Bengal Assembly Election results.

    The Incident

An unidentified group, accompanied by bulldozers, targeted and completely demolished a building in one of Kolkata’s busiest commercial hubs.

    • The Targets: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) New Market union office was the primary structure razed. Reports also suggest several meat shops in the vicinity were destroyed.

    • Atmosphere: The action triggered widespread panic among local traders, who abruptly shut their shops and fled as security forces were rushed to the spot to prevent further escalation.

    Political War of Words

The demolition has sparked a fierce debate between political factions:

    • TMC’s Allegations: Senior leaders, including Mahua Moitra and Derek O’Brien, shared visuals of the demolition on social media. They accused the BJP of unleashing “bulldozer politics” and “gundagardi” (hooliganism) as part of their victory celebrations. Moitra took a sardonic swipe at the BJP’s “Poribortan” (change) slogan, while O’Brien alleged the action took place under the watch of central forces.

    • Local Counter-Claims: Some residents and traders have disputed the political narrative, claiming the structure was an illegal construction. They asserted that the space had been forcibly occupied and converted into a union office in the past, and its removal was long overdue.

    Security Measures

Authorities have significantly beefed up security in and around the New Market area. Police patrols have been intensified to maintain law and order as the city remains on high alert following the seismic shift in the state’s political landscape.

Context: The incident follows a historic win for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the 2026 West Bengal elections, where the party secured over 200 seats, ousting the Trinamool Congress after its 15-year tenure.
