Supporting the Last Mile: Amazon India’s “Ashray” Network Expansion

Amazon India has announced a significant scaling of its Ashray initiative, a dedicated infrastructure project aimed at improving the working conditions of delivery associates. The company plans to more than double its footprint, reaching 250 centers by the end of 2026.

This move is part of a massive ₹2,800 crore investment dedicated to the safety, health, and wellbeing of the personnel powering its logistics network.

    What is the Ashray Network?

Launched to address the physical toll of delivery work—particularly during India’s extreme heatwaves—Ashray centers are dedicated rest areas open not just to Amazon drivers, but to all delivery associates across the industry.

    Key Amenities Provided:

    • Climate Control: Air-conditioned seating and resting spaces.

    • Hydration: Free drinking water and electrolytes.

    • Utility Support: Mobile charging points and Wi-Fi.

    • Hygiene & Safety: Clean washrooms and first-aid kits.

    Mobile Ashray Units

Recognizing that delivery partners often cannot divert from high-traffic routes to find a fixed facility, Amazon has introduced Mobile Ashray units. These are air-conditioned vans equipped with the same essential amenities, stationed at strategic hubs to provide “on-the-go” relief.

    Strategic Partnerships and Scale

The expansion is being executed through a collaborative model with public and private sector partners:

    • Partners: Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), Udyasa Foundation, and Rural Education and Development (READ) India.

    • Current Footprint: 100 centers across 16 cities (including Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai).

    • Immediate Milestone: 50 new centers are scheduled to launch by the end of May 2026.

    • Impact: The network recorded over one million visits in 2025 alone.

    The Broader Impact

This infrastructure push comes at a time of increased scrutiny regarding the “gig economy” and the welfare of frontline workers. By opening these facilities to drivers from competing platforms, Amazon is positioning the Ashray network as a piece of critical industry infrastructure rather than just a corporate perk.

The initiative complements existing internal facilities at Amazon’s fulfillment and sortation centers, creating a comprehensive support system that spans from the warehouse to the final delivery doorstep.
