    Non-Life Insurance Premiums Surge 16% in June, Hitting 5-Month High

    India’s non-life insurance sector experienced its fastest growth rate in five months this June. Propelled by strong momentum in standalone health coverage and private general insurance, gross direct premiums underwritten climbed 15.9% year-on-year (YoY) to reach ₹24,194.56 crore. This marks the strongest double-digit industry expansion since January 2026.

    The June Breakdown: Health Outpaces General Insurance

    Data from the General Insurance Council highlights a multi-speed expansion, with health specialists significantly outpacing legacy general insurers.

    • Standalone Health Insurers (Up 30.9%): Totaled ₹4,373.34 crore, continuing to serve as the industry’s fastest growth engine.

    • General Insurers (Up 14.3%): Rose to ₹22,771.94 crore, showing robust health across both state-owned and private players.

    • Specialized Insurers (Down 73.6%): Dropped sharply to just ₹51.06 crore.

    Public vs. Private Performance

    Private sector general insurers slightly outpaced their public counterparts in premium collection growth:

    Key Institutional Performers

    • Oriental Insurance (Public): Emerged as the fastest-growing public player, surging 30.9% to ₹2,277.63 crore.

    • ICICI Lombard (Private): Posted steady growth of 13.7% to ₹2,258.83 crore.

    • New India Assurance (Market Leader): Reported a 10.3% increase, anchoring the segment at ₹3,670.13 crore.

    • United India Insurance: Grew modestly at 2.7% to ₹1,791.69 crore.

    Standalone Health Performance

    Health insurance firms continue to lock in hyper-growth:

    • Care Health: Surged 41.9% to ₹970.37 crore.

    • Niva Bupa: Rose 34.3% to ₹798.17 crore.

    • Star Health: Grew 19.2% to ₹1,594.35 crore.

    Q1 FY27 Cumulative Picture (April–June)

    The strong performance in June lifted the entire first quarter of the fiscal year. Total gross direct premiums underwritten for the non-life insurance industry reached ₹87,825.41 crore, scoring a cumulative 10.7% YoY increase.
