India Bank Credit Growth Eases to 17.7% in Mid-July Fortnight Driven by Base Effect and Slower Retail Offtake

Indian bank credit growth moderated to 17.7% year-on-year during the fortnight ending July 15, easing slightly from previous peak levels as lenders manage credit-to-deposit ratios and navigate regulatory shifts around unsecured retail lending.

    Key Financial Takeaways

    • Credit Expansion Pace: Year-on-year non-food credit growth settled at 17.7%, down from the 19%+ levels registered in prior quarters due to a higher statistical base.

    • Credit vs. Deposit Gap: While loan growth remains robust, deposit growth continues to trail in the 11%–12% range. This keeps the banking system’s overall credit-to-deposit (C-D) ratio hovering around elevated levels above 80%.

    • Segmental Shifts:

      • Retail & Unsecured Credit: Growth in personal and unsecured retail advances saw temperance following regulatory nudges on risk weights.

      • Industrial & Corporate Loans: Offtake remained steady, supported by working capital needs and selective capex demand in manufacturing and infrastructure sectors.

    Why It Matters

The moderation in loan expansion reflects a deliberate balancing act by Indian banks. With deposit growth remaining inelastic relative to credit demand, lenders are focusing on protecting net interest margins (NIMs) and bringing loan-to-deposit ratios to more sustainable levels.
