The Union Government released an additional instalment of tax devolution amounting to ₹1,09,019 crore to state governments on August 1, 2026.

This advance tranche comes over and above the regular monthly tax devolution scheduled for August 10, aimed at bolstering state finances and accelerating capital and developmental expenditures across the country.

    Key Highlights

    • Early Financial Injection: The early release provides immediate liquidity to state exchequers, enabling state governments to front-load capital spending, infrastructure projects, and social welfare schemes.

    • In Addition to Regular Share: The ₹1.09 lakh crore transfer is separate from the normal monthly devolution slated for release on August 10, 2026.

    • Constitutional Mechanism: Under the current 15th Finance Commission framework, 41% of the Centre’s divisible tax pool is devolved to states across 14 instalments during a financial year.

    State-Wise Allocation Breakdown

Population metrics and Finance Commission formula weightages dictate the devolution distribution. Uttar Pradesh received the largest allocation, followed by Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and West Bengal.

Rank State Amount Received (₹ Crore)
    1 Uttar Pradesh ₹19,208
    2 Bihar ₹10,845
    3 Madhya Pradesh ₹8,010
    4 West Bengal ₹7,866
    5 Maharashtra ₹7,022
    6 Rajasthan ₹6,460
    7 Odisha ₹4,819
    8 Andhra Pradesh ₹4,597
    9 Karnataka ₹4,504
    10 Tamil Nadu ₹4,466

    Other Notable Allocations:

    • Mid-Sized Allocations: Gujarat (₹4,094 crore), Jharkhand (₹3,660 crore), Chhattisgarh (₹3,602 crore), Assam (₹3,552 crore), Kerala (₹2,597 crore), Telangana (₹2,370 crore), Punjab (₹2,176 crore), Haryana (₹1,484 crore), and Uttarakhand (₹1,244 crore).

    • Northeastern & Smaller States: Arunachal Pradesh (₹1,476 crore), Himachal Pradesh (₹996 crore), Tripura (₹699 crore), Meghalaya (₹688 crore), Manipur (₹682 crore), Mizoram (₹615 crore), Nagaland (₹524 crore), Goa (₹398 crore), and Sikkim (₹365 crore).

    Macroeconomic Impact & Fiscal Context

The Ministry of Finance’s proactive release aligns with the Centre’s broader push to maintain public investment momentum across states:

    1. Capex Acceleration: Untied tax devolution funds give states the flexibility to finance road networks, irrigation systems, urban infrastructure, and power distribution updates ahead of the upcoming festive season.

    2. Q1 FY27 Context: Net tax collections remained robust in Q1 (April–June 2026), reaching ₹6.4 lakh crore (up from ₹5.4 lakh crore in Q1 FY26), giving the Union government comfortable fiscal headroom to support state liquidity.

    3. Fiscal Deficit Tracking: India’s Q1 fiscal deficit stood at ₹3.1 lakh crore (18.2% of the full-year budget target of ₹16.96 lakh crore or 4.3% of GDP), reflecting steady capital outlay execution.
