After Adani, Tata Feels the Heat: Are Indian Firms Under Fire in Kenya?

Following the high-profile cancellation of Adani Group’s proposed infrastructure projects in Kenya, Tata Chemicals has emerged at the center of a major political and regulatory confrontation in the country. Kenyan President William Ruto publicly ordered Tata Chemicals to halt its century-long soda ash mining operations around Lake Magadi in Kajiado County, criticizing the company for extracting local natural resources without establishing sufficient downstream industrial capacity, glass-making factories, or chemical manufacturing plants locally.

This directive follows an earlier suspension of mining operations and exports by Kenya’s Ministry of Mining over regulatory compliance concerns, licensing disputes, and local economic participation. While these developments—coupled with historical friction involving other Indian corporations like Essar, Airtel, and Mahindra—have raised questions regarding the business climate for foreign investors, analysts note that Nairobi’s actions reflect a broader policy push for local beneficiation, job creation, and direct economic control over natural resources rather than isolated anti-India sentiment.

Tata Chemicals has maintained that it remains fully compliant with applicable regulations, noting that it has submitted all requested documentation to the government and is pursuing a resolution through legal and regulatory channels.
