Funding Skew Deepens in India’s Microfinance Sector: Tier-1 Lenders Flourish While Small MFIs Face Liquidity Squeeze

A widening funding bifurcation is taking shape across India’s microfinance sector, as institutional lenders increasingly concentrate capital toward large, established Tier-1 microfinance institutions (MFIs) while smaller players struggle with mounting credit constraints.

    • Concentration of Capital: Major banks and financial institutions are tightening risk parameters, channeling debt and portfolio buyouts primarily to top-tier MFIs with robust balance sheets, strong collection efficiencies, and diversified geographic footprints.

    • The Squeeze on Small Players: Smaller and regional microfinance institutions are experiencing a severe liquidity squeeze, facing higher borrowing costs and restricted credit lines as lenders turn risk-averse amid localized asset quality pressures and rising portfolio delinquencies.

    • Cost of Borrowing Disparity: The widening skew has created an uneven playing field where large entities secure wholesale funding at competitive rates, while smaller MFIs must absorb elevated costs that squeeze operating margins and hinder loan disbursement growth.

    • Systemic Implications: Industry stakeholders warn that prolonged funding concentration could accelerate consolidation across the microfinance ecosystem, potentially limiting credit availability for underserved borrowers in remote rural pockets where smaller lenders traditionally operate.
