Apple’s $2,000 Foldable iPhone: Can It Finally Make Foldable Phones Mainstream?

Apple is reportedly set to unveil its first-ever foldable iPhone at its annual product event in Cupertino, California—marking the company’s biggest design shift since the original iPhone debuted in 2007. Entering the market nearly seven years after Samsung’s first Galaxy Fold, Apple is arriving late, but it aims to do what it does best: take a niche technology and push it into the mainstream.

However, a high price tag and shifting consumer habits present significant hurdles.

    The $2,000 Price Barrier

According to UBS analyst David Vogt, the base model of the foldable iPhone is expected to start at around $2,000—nearly double the starting price of the premium iPhone 17 Pro ($1,099).

    • Affordability vs. Demand: This steep price point raises questions about mass-market adoption, especially in a market where foldables still account for less than 2% of total global smartphone shipments.

    • The “Halo Effect” Trade-Off: High-spending consumers who drop $2,000 on a phone may have less disposable income left over for ecosystem accessories like AirPods or the Apple Watch.

    • Component Pressures: The soaring cost of memory and storage chips—driven largely by the ongoing AI boom—is adding upward pressure on pricing across the tech sector.

    Testing Consumer Upgrade Habits

Beyond the price, Apple faces a deeper behavioral challenge: most people simply don’t buy phones just for new features. Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) survey data reveals that roughly two-thirds of buyers upgrade only when their old phone breaks, gets lost, or stops working. Only 14% purchase a new iPhone primarily for new features.

This dynamic risks turning the foldable iPhone into a niche or “gimmicky” device for early adopters unless Apple can definitively prove why a folding screen is genuinely useful for daily productivity and entertainment.

A Defining Moment for New Leadership

This launch marks a pivotal testing ground for John Ternus, who recently took over as Apple’s Chief Executive. Succeeding Tim Cook under lingering industry criticism that Apple has lacked fresh product categories, Ternus faces immense pressure to inject excitement back into Apple’s hardware lineup and flagship presentations.

Can Apple Scale the Foldable Market?

Despite the challenges, analysts like Counterpoint Research project that Apple could ship over 12 million foldable iPhones in its first year, potentially capturing around 28% of the foldable market shortly after launch.

Other manufacturers like Samsung, Google, and Huawei have spent years laying the groundwork. Now, Apple is betting that its massive customer base, powerful brand loyalty, and supply chain muscle can finally transform foldables from a luxury novelty into a mainstream category.
