The Indian government is actively evaluating the revised financial bids submitted for the strategic disinvestment of IDBI Bank, with the process progressing at a steady pace according to government sources.
Key Details of the Strategic Sale:
-
The Bidders: The two remaining interested suitors—billionaire investor Prem Watsa-backed Fairfax Financial Holdings and Dubai-based Emirates NBD—submitted their revised financial bids in mid-July.
-
Stake on Offer: The central government and the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) are together looking to offload a 60.72% stake in the lender. This comprises the Centre’s 30.48% share and LIC’s 30.24% share. (Combined, the government and LIC currently hold 94.71% in the bank).
-
Regulatory Clearances: Both prospective buyers already hold crucial clearances, including security clearance from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and a “Fit and Proper” assessment from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
-
Background: The disinvestment process faced a brief hurdle earlier when initial financial bids submitted in February came in below the reserve price set by the inter-ministerial group, prompting the government to temporarily pause the process before inviting fresh revised bids this financial year.
