China’s blue-chip stock index tumbled to its lowest level in more than a year, dragged down by an intensifying selloff across artificial intelligence-related supply chain shares. Meanwhile, Hong Kong markets managed a partial recovery, helped by advances in key technology majors.
AI Supply Chain Slump Drags Down Mainland Equities
The mainland market faced heavy downward pressure as tech and hardware components tied to the artificial intelligence boom suffered sharp losses. Key industry bellwethers—including major optical transceiver manufacturers and memory chip producers—slumped significantly as investors pared back exposure to high-flying tech sectors.
The continuous correction pushed mainland benchmarks to multi-month lows, reflecting broader anxiety over valuations and cooling momentum in the tech sector. In response to the growing volatility, institutional investors increasingly rotated capital into defensive and traditional sectors, such as consumer staples and select commodity indices, to hedge against further risk.
Hong Kong Tech Majors Stage a Rebound
In contrast to the mainland’s woes, Hong Kong markets found some footing. Technology majors in the Special Administrative Region advanced, providing a much-needed lift to the broader indices. However, analysts noted that despite the rebound, underlying caution remains high as the market continues to grapple with regional currency dynamics and lingering questions over corporate earnings exposure to overseas revenues.
