Adani Airport Holdings Ltd (AAHL) is set to begin a phased redevelopment of Mumbai’s nearly 60-year-old Terminal 1 starting in January 2027, beginning with the North Section of Terminal 1B due to pressing safety considerations. The initial phase will temporarily affect around 5 million passengers annually—roughly 9% of the airport’s 55 million total passenger traffic—while the remaining 91% of operations will continue without disruption.
To ease the transition, airlines operating out of the affected zone are being offered the option to temporarily relocate flights to the newly operational Navi Mumbai International Airport. AAHL CEO Arun Bansal emphasized that the move is temporary and made feasible by the new airport’s capacity. Upon completion of the overhaul, Terminal 1’s capacity is expected to increase by 33%, expanding from 15 million to 20 million passengers annually and restoring historical flight slots.
