A major milestone in traditional medicine was reached on April 17, 2026, as the All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the General Insurance Council. This agreement officially bridges the gap between traditional Ayush treatments and modern health insurance, offering patients a seamless, “cashless” experience.
Key Highlights of the Agreement
The move, finalized during a two-day Chintan Shivir (Brainstorming Session) in New Delhi, ensures that Ayurveda is no longer an “out-of-pocket” luxury for many.
-
Cashless Access: AIIA is now empanelled with all 32 general insurance companies in India. Eligible patients can receive Ayurveda treatments at authorized facilities without upfront payments.
-
Standardized Rates: The Ministry of Ayush has released official benchmark rates for insurance, ensuring transparency and preventing overcharging.
-
Regulatory Alignment: This follows the 2024 IRDAI mandate that required insurers to treat AYUSH coverage on par with conventional allopathic care.
New Support Systems
To assist patients and the public in navigating these new benefits, the Ministry has launched two dedicated communication channels:
-
Toll-Free Support: 1800-11-0008 (Launched for beneficiary assistance).
-
Digital Outreach: A new WhatsApp channel has been established to provide real-time updates and support.
The “Integrated Healthcare” Vision
The Chintan Shivir brought together leaders from the Ministry of Health and NITI Aayog to discuss a hybrid future for Indian medicine.
“Our goal is to build trust at the global level. We are holding discussions on integrating Ayush treatments with allopathy to create a collaborative, evidence-based healthcare system.” — Prataprao Jadhav, Union Minister of State (IC) for Ayush
Roadmap for the Future
Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, Secretary of the Ministry of Ayush, emphasized that the focus is now moving toward:
-
Standardization: Creating uniform protocols for treatments.
-
Global Credibility: Using research and clinical evidence to validate Ayurveda internationally.
-
Public Outreach: Utilizing digital platforms to ensure every citizen knows their insurance rights regarding traditional medicine.
By bringing all 32 major insurers under one umbrella for AIIA, the government is effectively making Ayurveda a standard component of India’s national health security.
