The women-led menstrual cycle and period tracking app Clue has partnered with Süddeutsche Krankenversicherung a.G. (SDK), a leading private health insurer in Germany. This milestone makes Clue the first period tracking platform in the world to be officially covered by health insurance.
Under the new agreement, thousands of fully insured SDK members—along with the roughly 1,600 employees of both SDK and Stuttgarter Lebensversicherung a.G.—will receive premium access to Clue Plus at no additional cost.
Closing the Gap in Women’s Healthcare
The partnership directly addresses a massive structural gap in global healthcare. Despite being the largest consumers of health and wellness products, women remain chronically underserved.
-
The Problem: In a survey of nearly 12,000 Clue users, two-thirds reported significant concerns about their menstrual health, with the vast majority managing painful or irregular symptoms entirely on their own.
-
The Solution: While many global governments debate policy updates like menstrual leave, SDK is proactively providing members with science-backed digital tools to track, understand, and manage their reproductive health daily.
What Clue Plus Offers
The app acts as a digital health journal that tracks symptoms, moods, and physical experiences across multiple life stages:
-
Dynamic Tracking Modes: Tailored setups for standard cycle tracking, trying to conceive, pregnancy monitoring, and perimenopause.
-
Clinical Value: The app generates a structured, long-term health record and offers educational content, allowing users to have more productive, data-driven conversations with their doctors.
Expanding the B2B Network
This insurance tie-up is part of Clue’s aggressive strategy to integrate its premium services directly into corporate benefits and insurance packages. SDK joins Clue’s growing list of commercial and employee-benefit partners, which already includes Wellhub, Urban Sports Club, Klarna, Vodafone, Telefonica, Orange, and various HSA/FSA-eligible programs in the United States.
“For a long time, women’s health was not sufficiently considered in the healthcare system and was even a taboo subject in some cases,” said Olaf Engemann, Board Member for Sales and Marketing at SDK. “Our goal is to close gaps in care and provide our insured members with health offerings that fit seamlessly into their daily lives.”
