Correcting Rupee Against Fundamentals Ultimately Futile, Says Former RBI Governor D. Subbarao

Former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor D. Subbarao has cautioned that attempting to artificially correct or override macroeconomic fundamentals to prop up the Indian rupee is ultimately an unsustainable exercise.

Speaking on currency management and foreign exchange dynamics, Subbarao emphasized the limits of central bank intervention when faced with deep-seated economic realities.

    Key Highlights & Insights

    • Primacy of Fundamentals: Subbarao noted that while central banks can successfully manage excessive volatility and smooth out sharp, disruptive fluctuations in the short term, fighting long-term macroeconomic trends—such as persistent inflation differentials, trade deficits, and capital outflows—is ultimately futile.

    • Role of RBI Intervention: Central bank intervention in foreign exchange markets is best deployed to maintain market order rather than defend an arbitrary, non-market exchange rate.

    • Global Pressures: His remarks come amid heightened currency volatility driven by a strengthening U.S. dollar, fluctuating global crude oil prices, and shifting foreign institutional investor (FII) capital flows across emerging markets.

    • Competitiveness Balance: While a weaker rupee increases import costs (particularly for oil and electronics), it can offer temporary export competitiveness, highlighting the complex balancing act central banks face in managing domestic purchasing power against external trade health.
