The Gurugram Cyber Police (West) have arrested four men for defrauding a local resident of ₹1.19 crore. The syndicate lured the victim with promises of recovering funds from lapsed insurance policies by impersonating officials from the Insurance Ombudsman office.

Following their arrest on Wednesday, the suspects were produced before a local court, which granted a two-day police custody order to facilitate further investigation into the network.

The Modus Operandi: How the Scam Unfolded

    • Initial Contact & Bait: On July 27, the victim filed a police complaint reporting that scammers impersonating Insurance Ombudsman officials promised to help him claim ₹57 lakh tied to his lapsed insurance policies.

    • The Pitch: The fraudsters claimed they would cancel the agent code, transfer the beneficiary code directly to him, and release a total payout of approximately ₹1.04 crore.

    • Fraudulent Demands: Under the guise of processing fees, maintenance charges, transaction costs, and “Full & Final (F&F)” settlement fees, the victim was persuaded to transfer ₹1.19 crore across multiple bank accounts in installments.

Key Accused & Individual Roles Identified

The four arrested individuals operated across Delhi, Mumbai, and West Bengal to execute the operation:

Name Age & Location Alleged Role in Syndicate
Bharat Janak Singh Kapadia 68, Mumbai Handled cash withdrawals via cheques, retained commissions, and routed remaining proceeds to network heads.
Mohammad Moshirul Haque 35, West Bengal Managed dummy accounts opened under false identities (e.g., “Utsav Upadhyay”), which received ~₹43 lakh of the funds.
Subhash Kumar 40, Delhi (Cyber Cafe Owner) Forged government identity documents used to open fraudulent bank accounts.
Sahil Gusain 19, Delhi Assisted with document forgery, procured pre-activated SIM cards, and distributed them for fraudulent calls.

    Status of Investigation

According to Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP Cyber) Gaurav Fogat, interrogations are ongoing to trace additional bank accounts, identify higher-level syndicate managers, and recover the remaining proceeds of the crime.
