A major crisis was averted at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport on Saturday morning, March 28, 2026, after an IndiGo aircraft flying from Visakhapatnam reported an engine failure mid-air. The airport declared a “full emergency” on Runway 28 to facilitate a priority landing for the distressed plane.

    The Incident

The fire department received an emergency call at 10:53 AM, signaling that the aircraft was experiencing a “technical snag” consistent with engine failure.

    • Flight Number: 6E 579

    • Route: Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) to Delhi

    • Aircraft Type: Boeing 737

    • Onboard: Approximately 160 passengers and crew.

    Emergency Response and Safety

Despite the critical nature of the mechanical issue, the pilots executed a safe landing just minutes after the distress call was shared.

    • Standard Operating Procedure: Pilots requested a priority landing as a precautionary step.

    • Ground Support: Delhi Police and airport emergency services were stationed at the runway to manage the situation.

    • Outcome: All passengers and crew are reported safe. The aircraft has been grounded and is currently undergoing comprehensive maintenance checks.

    Official Statements

An IndiGo spokesperson confirmed the incident, framing it as a managed technical difficulty:

“The pilots requested priority landing and the aircraft arrived safely… All relevant authorities were promptly informed and the aircraft is undergoing necessary checks and maintenance.”

    Related Developments in the Region

The news of the emergency landing coincides with several other major headlines from today:

    • Diplomatic Denial: India has officially rejected a New York Times report claiming Elon Musk was part of a recent call between PM Modi and Donald Trump, stating the conversation was strictly between the two leaders.

    • Education: The Directorate of Education (DoE) Delhi is set to release the results for Classes 6, 7, and 8 today on the official portal (edudel.nic.in).
