Non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) experienced a notable acceleration in credit expansion during August 2026. According to the latest data released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), total credit growth reached 15.8% year-on-year, pushing the overall lending portfolio to ₹60.6 lakh crore—up from 14.9% in the previous month.
The primary drivers behind this expansion were massive surges in gold and consumer durable financing, alongside solid momentum in retail and agricultural lending.
Key Highlights from RBI Data (August 2026)
-
Overall Credit Growth: Rose to 15.8% YoY, totaling ₹60.6 lakh crore.
-
Gold Loans: Experienced a remarkable surge of 69.1% to reach ₹3.65 lakh crore (compared to 46.8% growth in the same period last year).
-
Consumer Durable Loans: Jumped 56.4% to stand at ₹77,784 crore, a significant acceleration from 19.6% previously.
-
Retail Loans: Surged by 22% to ₹26.5 lakh crore, accounting for nearly 44% of the entire NBFC lending universe.
-
Housing Loans: Grew 12.1% to ₹8.62 lakh crore, marking an improvement over the 3.8% rise recorded earlier.
-
Agriculture & Allied Activities: Recorded strong growth of 17.4%, up sharply from 5.1% in the year-ago period.
-
Industry Credit: Remained relatively stable, edging up marginally to 8.4% from 8.3%.
-
Services Sector: Moderated to 16.2% growth (down from 24%), dampened by deceleration in sub-segments like trade and transport operators, though commercial real estate lending stayed robust.
Market Implications
The data points to strong consumer demand for secured and short-term credit, particularly via gold loans and consumer financing, heading into the festive season. While retail and agricultural portfolios showed stellar expansion, the moderation in services-sector lending highlights localized cooling in specific commercial verticals.
