PIB Issues Fact Check: Claims That E20 Petrol Rejects Insurance Claims Are “Completely Fake”

The Press Information Bureau (PIB) Fact Check unit has stepped into the viral storm surrounding ethanol-blended petrol, explicitly declaring social media posts that claim E20 fuel will invalidate your vehicle insurance as completely fake.

The government’s official communication wing issued a public advisory on X (formerly Twitter) to stop the spread of panic among Indian vehicle owners. This follows definitive clarifications from major insurers, including ICICI Lombard, emphasizing that your choice of fuel grade does not strip away your legal right to insurance payouts.

    The Anatomy of the Misinformation

The viral rumors originally began circulating due to misconstrued interpretations of standard insurance clauses regarding vehicle “negligence” and “proper usage.”

Because E20 petrol (80% petrol blended with 20% ethanol) is rapidly becoming the standard fuel grade at retail pumps across India, owners of older vehicles worried that using a high-ethanol blend not originally recommended by their manufacturer would give insurance companies a loophole to deny accident claims.

Fact Check Breakdown: What the PIB & Insurers Clarified

The joint statements from the government and the insurance sector lay out a definitive legal boundary for motorists:

    • Policy Validity is Ironclad: In its official statement, the PIB Fact Check unit stated: “Motor insurance policies remain fully valid with the use of E20 fuel.”

    • The Cause-of-Loss Rule: Insurance claims are evaluated solely based on the occurrence of insured perils—such as a collision, theft, third-party damage, or fire. The type of fuel currently sitting in your vehicle’s tank at the time of an accident has absolutely zero bearing on claim admissibility.

    • Not Treated as Negligence: Insurers have confirmed that filling an older vehicle with government-mandated E20 fuel will never be legally classified as an act of owner negligence or improper maintenance to reject a claim.

    A Reminder on Digital Hygiene

With fake news spreading rapidly across messaging platforms, the PIB has urged the public to verify sensational claims through official government portals or reliable news sources before forwarding them. Suspicious financial or policy rumors can be reported directly to the PIB Fact Check unit via their dedicated WhatsApp lines or email channels to prevent unnecessary consumer panic.
