Wall Street is preparing for a monumental shift as major U.S. equity exchanges—including Nasdaq, NYSE Arca, the 24X National Exchange, and Cboe EDGX—prepare to launch overnight trading sessions starting December 6. Operating from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. ET, this expansion aims to capture soaring demand from foreign investors and compete with crypto and prediction markets that never sleep.
While overnight trading has grown exponentially (surging over 350% from a year ago, primarily fueled by retail and international participants), institutional investors remain cautious. Major institutional players and investment banks have expressed concerns regarding thin liquidity, wider bid-ask spreads, and heightened volatility during late-night hours. Although market infrastructure—such as clearing houses and data feeds—has expanded to support a 24-hour model, Wall Street’s heavyweights are largely taking a “wait-and-see” approach to evaluate whether market quality will catch up with the push for round-the-clock trading.
