The Supreme Court of India has stepped into the high-stakes legal battle over the ₹30,000 crore Kapur family estate, issuing a notice to Priya Kapur (widow of late industrialist Sunjay Kapur) following a petition by his 80-year-old mother, Rani Kapur.
Core of the Dispute
The legal conflict centers on the RK Family Trust (or Sona Group Family Trust), which Rani Kapur claims was created through “forged, fabricated, and fraudulent” documents in 2017 while she was recovering from a stroke.
-
Rani Kapur’s Allegations: She contends that her late son, Sunjay Kapur, and his wife, Priya, manipulated her into signing documents that divested her of her entire legacy, residence, and assets, worth approximately ₹30,000 crore. She claims she was made the “settlor” on paper but was entirely excluded as a beneficiary.
-
Priya Kapur’s Position: Priya, who is a trustee and beneficiary, maintains the trust was legally established for the benefit of Sunjay and his heirs. Recently, Priya served a notice to remove Rani Kapur as a trustee, accusing her of breaching fiduciary duties by challenging the trust’s validity.
Supreme Court’s Intervention
A bench comprising Justices J.B. Pardiwala and Vijay Bishnoi expressed concern over the potential for “long-drawn litigation” involving an elderly petitioner.
-
Urging Mediation: The court strongly advised both parties to pursue mediation, remarking to Rani Kapur’s counsel, “Why are you all fighting? You are 80. This is not the age for your client to fight… Go for mediation once and for all.”
-
Asset Protection: While pushing for an amicable settlement, the Court issued notices to Priya Kapur and 22 others to respond to the plea. Rani Kapur is seeking a status quo to prevent the “dissipation” or diversion of family assets while the case is pending.
Background and Parallel Suits
The dispute intensified after the sudden death of Sunjay Kapur (Chairman of Sona Comstar) in June 2025.
-
The Will Controversy: There is a separate legal challenge regarding Sunjay Kapur’s will. Priya Kapur claims he left his entire estate to her, but this is being contested as “forged” by Sunjay’s children from his previous marriage to actor Karisma Kapoor.
-
The Stake: The assets involve significant holdings in the Sona Group, a major player in the Indian automotive component sector.
The Supreme Court has scheduled the next hearing for May 7, 2026, to review the progress of the mediation attempt.
