A new industry study highlights a growing rift between UK pet owners and insurance companies. According to the 2026 Guidewire Insurance Customer Attitudes report, UK pet insurance customers are among the least satisfied in Europe, frustrated by complex policies, sharp premium increases, and communication delays during the claims process.
At the same time, the research reveals a massive generational shift, with younger pet owners increasingly abandoning traditional veterinary visits in favor of digital self-help tools and artificial intelligence.
The European Satisfaction Gap
The report, published by insurance software provider Guidewire, shows that just 58% of UK pet owners are satisfied with their insurance claims experience—putting the UK significantly behind its European neighbors.
| Country | Customer Claims Satisfaction Rate |
| France | 76% |
| Germany | 70% |
| Spain | 64% |
| United Kingdom | 58% |
According to Sebastia Company-Mas, Product Marketing Manager at Guidewire, the UK’s poor ranking stems from it being a highly mature, hyper-competitive market operating under immense cost pressures. Driven by skyrocketing veterinary fees that have vastly outpaced general inflation, insurers have tightened exclusions and raised premiums, triggering friction with consumers during deeply emotional times.
Furthermore, dissatisfaction is rarely about whether a claim gets paid; instead, it is driven by poor communication, processing delays, and a general lack of trust in the transparency of the policy limits.
Younger Owners Turn to Digital Diagnoses
Faced with rising costs, a growing number of pet owners are looking for alternatives to traditional vet visits. Nearly one in three UK pet owners (31.5%) now turn to online symptom checkers and internet searches rather than driving to a clinic.
This trend explodes when breaking down younger demographics:
-
Ages 18–24: 46% bypass the vet for online health searches.
-
Ages 25–34: 54.5%—more than half—rely on digital channels first.
Mixed Feelings on AI Vets
The report also highlighted highly split public sentiment regarding the integration of artificial intelligence into pet healthcare. While 28% of UK respondents said they would completely trust an AI-powered mobile app to scan their pet and deliver an instant health assessment, a strict 50% flatly rejected the idea, and 21.5% remained completely undecided.
The Industry Opportunity: Guidewire notes that this trust gap gives insurers a unique window to reshape consumer perceptions. By developing reliable, vetted digital health tools, insurers can help younger demographics proactively manage their pets’ well-being, streamline communication, and rebuild trust in a strained market.
