UniCredit Receives ECB Approval to Apply the “Danish Compromise” on Insurance Holdings

UniCredit has secured formal authorization from the European Central Bank (ECB) to implement the Danish Compromise methodology when calculating its consolidated capital ratios.

    Key Impacts of the Authorization

    • Capital Strength: The transition allows UniCredit to risk-weight its insurance holdings rather than fully deducting them from regulatory capital. Based on second-quarter positioning, this adjustment provides an estimated boost of approximately 52 basis points (+0.52%) to the bank’s Common Equity Tier 1 (CET1) ratio.

    • Timeline: UniCredit will officially adopt the methodology starting with its third-quarter (3Q26) financial reporting.

    • Strategic Alignment: The approval supports CEO Andrea Orcel’s broader capital optimization strategy, following the bank’s domestic life insurance internalisation last year after buying out former partners CNP Assurances and Allianz.
