India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) continued its massive growth trajectory, reaching 55.49 crore onboarded users as of June 2026. In a written reply to the Lok Sabha during the monsoon session of Parliament, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary shared National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) data showing explosive growth in both transaction volumes and value.

    The Massive Five-Year Growth Trajectory

UPI has effectively become the backbone of India’s retail payments economy. During the 2025-26 financial year (FY26), the platform processed a record 24,161.69 crore transactions, with the total value hitting an unprecedented ₹314.23 lakh crore.

Financial Year Transaction Volume (in Crore) Total Transaction Value (in Lakh Crore)
    FY 2021-22 4,595.61 ₹84.16
    FY 2022-23 8,371.44 ₹139.15
    FY 2023-24 13,112.95 ₹199.95
    FY 2024-25 18,586.60 ₹260.56
    FY 2025-26 24,161.69 ₹314.23

    Global Expansion and Security Tightening

    • International Footprint: Driven by NPCI International Payments Ltd. (NIPL), India’s digital payment architecture is steadily going global. UPI infrastructure is now active across 12 partner nations—enabling person-to-merchant (P2M) payments in countries like Bhutan, Singapore, the UAE, France, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, Qatar, and Cambodia, alongside person-to-person (P2P) remittances linking Singapore, Nepal, and Greece.

    • Next-Gen Fraud Safeguards: To protect the massive ecosystem, the government and the RBI have rolled out stricter protocols. These include risk-based transaction ceilings to mitigate fraud, tighter controls against unauthorized SIM swaps or mobile number modifications, and the deployment of the Comprehensive UPI Information Security Framework (CUISF) 2025 along with a new Mobile Application Security Framework.
