Americans applied for new credit at the highest rate in nearly five years this past June, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s latest Survey of Consumer Expectations Credit Access Survey. The overall application rate for all credit types reached its highest level since October 2021.

While overall credit demand climbed, specific categories showed mixed movement compared to February 2026. The likelihood of consumers applying for new credit cards, auto loans, higher credit card limits, or mortgage refinancing eased slightly. In contrast, demand for new mortgages saw a slight uptick.

The data also highlighted ongoing financial strain for many households. The New York Fed reported that 34% of respondents believe they may need to find $2,000 for an unexpected expense. While this is up slightly from February, it remains lower than the 36% recorded in June of last year.
