U.S. stock indexes surged on the first trading day of August as potential diplomatic progress between the U.S. and Iran eased geopolitical tensions and sent crude oil prices sliding. Investor focus was split between falling energy costs and a massive week of corporate earnings and economic reports.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average led the initial surge, jumping over 600 points shortly after the opening bell, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite also posted strong gains.

    Key Market Developments

    • Oil Slumps on Diplomatic Signals: Brent crude dropped more than 5.5% following reports that U.S. President Donald Trump indicated talks with Iran regarding the Strait of Hormuz could begin Monday, though Iranian officials issued conflicting statements.

    • Amazon Hits $3 Trillion: Amazon shares jumped up to 4.8%, pushing the tech giant’s market valuation to the $3 trillion milestone for the first time.

    • Healthcare Megamerger Rumors: Shares of Bristol Myers Squibb rose 1.5% following reports of preliminary merger talks with AstraZeneca. A potential combination could create a pharmaceutical giant valued near $400 billion.

    • Semiconductor Pressure: Semiconductor stocks continued to struggle after a difficult July. The Philadelphia SE Semiconductor Index dropped 2.8%, with Micron falling 3.4% following news of expanded memory-chip capacity from Chinese competitor CXMT.

    Outlook for the Week

Seven of eleven S&P sectors opened in positive territory, led by communications services, while energy stocks lagged due to falling oil prices. Investors are closely monitoring upcoming earnings reports from major AI-linked and technology names, including Palantir, AMD, and SpaceX, which will report its first quarterly results since going public.

In addition to corporate earnings, market participants are bracing for key economic indicators throughout the week, culminating in Friday’s official U.S. nonfarm payrolls report.
