A day after a U.S. federal court dismissed criminal charges against him and his nephew Sagar Adani, Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani addressed employees, partners, and stakeholders in the second edition of the group’s internal address series, Apni Baat, Apno Ke Saath.
Expressing “humility rather than triumph,” Adani emphasized that surviving period-defining corporate adversity reinforced his faith in the rule of law, institutional integrity, and core human values.
Key Highlights & Core Messages
1. “Trust Is Greater Than Any Legal Right”
Recalling the conglomerate’s decision in early 2023 to withdraw its ₹20,000 crore Follow-on Public Offer (FPO)—despite it being fully subscribed—following the Hindenburg Research report, Adani noted:
-
“While laws confer rights, values determine when those rights should be exercised.”
-
He stressed that long-term stakeholder confidence is earned by prioritizing trust over legal entitlements or short-term financial gains.
2. Gratitude for Unwavering Stakeholder Support
Adani credited workers, suppliers, vendors, and business partners for maintaining operational focus throughout the legal proceedings:
-
“While public attention remained fixed on the legal proceedings, employees, workers, suppliers, contractors, vendors and partners quietly continued building businesses, serving customers and delivering on their commitments.”
-
He added that this internal dedication transformed one of the group’s most difficult chapters into one of its strongest growth phases.
3. Viewing Criticism as an Opportunity for Introspection
Rather than dismissing past allegations or negative scrutiny, Adani welcomed external feedback:
-
“I also express gratitude to those who questioned and criticised the Group… criticism, irrespective of intent, offers an opportunity for introspection and improvement.”
Context: The U.S. Court Dismissal
The address followed an order by U.S. District Judge Nicholas Garaufis of the Eastern District of New York, who approved the U.S. Department of Justice’s (DoJ) motion to dismiss with prejudice key criminal charges against Gautam Adani, Sagar Adani, and former Adani Green Energy CEO Vneet Jaain.
-
Background: The indictment, unsealed in November 2024, had alleged a $265 million bribery scheme involving Indian solar contracts and misleading U.S. investors.
-
DoJ Motion: Prosecutors sought to withdraw the charges after re-evaluating jurisdictional boundaries and evidentiary grounds, clarifying that the alleged transactions did not occur within U.S. jurisdiction.
