Defense technology firm AeroVironment experienced a sharp negative market reaction, falling nearly 5% despite delivering a robust fiscal Q1 2027 earnings beat and reporting a record order backlog.
For the quarter, AeroVironment posted adjusted earnings of $0.59 per share, easily outpacing Wall Street consensus expectations of $0.22 per share and improving significantly from the $0.32 per share reported in the same period last year. Total quarterly revenue climbed 6% year-on-year to $480.5 million, up from $454.7 million a year earlier, though some tracking platforms noted the figure fell short of higher individual analyst targets. Profitability metrics strengthened across the board, with the company’s gross margin expanding to 26%, up from 21%.
The standout highlight of the quarter was the company’s surging order pipeline. AeroVironment’s funded backlog jumped 37% year-on-year to a record $1.5 billion, propelled by approximately $700 million in new bookings and a strong book-to-bill ratio of 1.4, indicating that incoming orders significantly outpaced recognized revenue.
Despite the bottom-line strength and strong demand drivers for autonomous systems and counter-drone technologies, AeroVironment shares (AVAV) fell 4.99% to close at $141.36. Market analysts attribute the pullback to investor jitters over elevated valuation multiples, execution risks, and mixed top-line comparisons relative to aggressive market expectations.
Looking ahead, management reaffirmed its full-year fiscal 2027 guidance, continuing to target approximately $2.2 billion in sales and $315 million in EBITDA, backed by strong visibility from its record-breaking backlog.
