Driven by robust economic activity, enhanced compliance, and technology-led tax monitoring, Andhra Pradesh’s commercial tax performance reached new heights in the first half of fiscal year 2026-27.
Key Performance Highlights
-
H1 Total Collections: Total commercial tax collections rose 18% year-on-year to ₹30,435.98 crore during the April–September 2026 period, marking an absolute increase of ₹4,543.06 crore compared to the previous financial year.
-
Record September Performance: September closed out the half-year strongly with total collections touching ₹4,986.18 crore—a 15.03% increase over the same month last year, representing the highest monthly collection to date.
-
Net GST Growth: Net Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections grew 18% to ₹19,635.49 crore in H1, up from ₹16,760.21 crore a year ago. September net GST alone surged 14.10% to ₹3,182.87 crore.
-
Outperforming National Averages: The state’s September net GST growth significantly outpaced the national post-settlement average of 8%, standing marginally ahead of neighboring states like Karnataka and Telangana (both at 14%) and Kerala (9%).
Drivers of Revenue Growth
The state Commercial Taxes Department highlighted several specific growth vectors underpinning the stellar half-yearly numbers:
-
Segment Contributions: Leading industrial commodities driving September’s momentum included electric machinery, equipment, iron & steel, and plastics. On the services side, financial services, support services, professional/technical services, and real estate led the gains.
-
Petroleum & Liquor VAT: Petroleum VAT collections grew 20.77% to ₹1,666.91 crore in September, while VAT on liquor rose 3.7% to ₹86 crore, and professional tax increased 3.99% to ₹43.53 crore.
-
IGST Settlements: IGST settlements to the state rose 20.12% to ₹1,927.62 crore in September, reflecting increased consumption of goods and services alongside large-scale infrastructure and industrial developments (such as projects in Amaravati, ports, and industrial corridors).
Technology-Led Administration
Much of the credit for the revenue buoyancy is being attributed to the state’s aggressive modernization and AI-driven tax administration model. Key technological interventions include:
-
AI-Based Analytics: Automated scrutiny, predictive analytics for identifying high-risk taxpayers, and detection of discrepancies or ineligible input tax credit (ITC) claims.
-
Cross-Departmental Data Sharing: Seamless integration with external departments including Registration, Labour, Electricity, Mines & Geology, and the APCRDA.
-
Digital Infrastructure Integration: Utilizing UPI-based analytics, discom-linked registration verification, and professional tax integration.
The success of Andhra Pradesh’s tech-integrated compliance model has drawn wider national attention, with official delegations from states like Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh visiting to study the framework.
