Fed’s Kashkari Warns U.S. Inflation Remains Stubbornly High Despite Rate Hike

In recent statements, Minneapolis Federal Reserve President Neel Kashkari emphasized that U.S. inflation remains uncomfortably high and is deeply entrenched across all sectors of the economy, rather than being driven solely by volatile energy or oil price shocks.

    • Widespread Price Pressures: Speaking on national media, Kashkari noted that even after stripping out volatile food and energy categories, underlying inflation remains too high and spans broadly into services and everyday consumption.

    • Defense of Rate Actions: His remarks follow the Federal Reserve’s unanimous decision to raise its benchmark interest rate by a quarter percentage point to a target range of 3.75% to 4.00%. Kashkari stressed that while interest rates cannot directly resolve external supply disruptions like oil spikes, the central bank must use its monetary tools to combat broader domestic price pressures.

    • Economic Resilience: Pointing to solid overall growth and signs of improving productivity, Kashkari highlighted that the broader U.S. economy and labor market remain robust, giving the Fed space to keep its policy stance focused on bringing inflation back down to its 2% target.
