Xiaomi Warns of Ongoing Smartphone Price Hikes and Lengthening Upgrade Cycles Due to Chip Shortage

Smartphone upgrade cycles in India have drastically expanded from less than a year in 2017 to an average of four years, driven heavily by rising costs associated with a persistent global chip and memory shortage. According to insights shared by Xiaomi India leadership—Chief Business Officer Sandeep Singh Arora and Associate Director of Marketing & PR Sandeep Sarma—this cost escalation is expected to continue through the second half of 2026, particularly impacting pricing during the upcoming festival period.

    Key Market & Consumer Shifts

    • Extended Ownership: Device upgrades that once occurred every 9 to 12 months now average around four years, with trends pointing toward even longer lifespans.

    • Rise in Financing: As hardware costs increase, a growing number of consumers rely on EMI and structured financing options to purchase new devices.

    • Value-Driven Choices: Pure specifications are no longer enough to sway buyers; consumers now evaluate overall ownership experiences, durability, and practical utility.

The Role of AI Beyond the Buzzwords Xiaomi leadership emphasized that practical, background AI utility outweighs flashy generative tools for most users. Key features driving consumer engagement include:

    • Circle to Search: Continues to be one of the most frequently requested and utilized features across Xiaomi and Redmi portfolios via recent HyperOS updates.

    • Subconscious Optimization: AI layers operating quietly in the background for battery charging habits, display performance, and camera adjustments.

    • Productivity Tools: Everyday utilities like Gallery Editor and AI Notes that offer tangible, day-to-day convenience.

With upcoming releases like the Redmi Note 17 series—following a milestone of over 85 million Redmi Note units sold in India over the past 12 years—Xiaomi aims to navigate these industry-wide hardware constraints by focusing on long-term durability, overall value, and integrated AI utility.
