OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Work, a new AI agent designed to automate complex workflows, manage daily correspondence, and handle time-consuming business tasks. Powered by the new GPT 5.6 model family, the agent can operate independently for hours, breaking down massive projects into smaller steps and executing them without constant user prompting.
Unlike standard conversational AI, ChatGPT Work is built to take direct action across different environments. It connects with tools across Google Workspace, Microsoft 360, and Slack to compile data and generate finished business materials, including spreadsheets, slide decks, documents, and web apps.
Under the hood, ChatGPT Work integrates OpenAI’s Codex technology, allowing the agent to access files, read GitHub repositories, fix bugs, and build functional landing pages. This integration is part of OpenAI’s broader strategy to consolidate its individual tools into a single “Super App.” The underlying GPT 5.6 framework features three specialized models:
-
Sol: The flagship, high-performance model.
-
Teraa: A balanced model optimized for everyday tasks.
-
Luna: A fast, cost-effective option.
Defining Chat vs. Codex vs. Work
With this release, OpenAI’s core tools serve distinct functions:
-
ChatGPT Chat is designed for quick search, brainstorming, and conversational assistance.
-
Codex is specialized for writing code, running commands, and managing repositories.
-
ChatGPT Work is built for research, data analysis, multi-platform workflow automation, and asset creation.
In practice, users can deploy ChatGPT Work to monitor information over time, automate multi-platform tasks (such as triggering actions between Gmail and note-taking apps), schedule events, and build shareable web tools via custom URLs.
Availability
ChatGPT Work is available across web, desktop, and mobile platforms:
-
Desktop: Accessible for free to all Mac and Windows users through the updated desktop app.
-
Web and Mobile: Currently rolling out to Pro, Enterprise, and Edu subscribers, with access for Plus and Business users arriving in the coming days.
