Android Backup Changes: What Google Is Planning for Storage Limits

Google is rolling out a significant update to how Android device backups consume cloud storage space. Android users are receiving notifications regarding new policy adjustments that bring device backups directly into the primary Google Account storage pool.

Here is a clear breakdown of what is changing, how it impacts your cloud quota, and the new settings Google is introducing to help manage it.

    What Is Changing?

Under previous policies, standard Android system backups—such as SMS text messages, call history, device settings, and app data—were excluded from counting against your storage quota. Only media uploaded to Google Photos and attachments in MMS were counted.

Going forward, all Android backup data will count against your Google Account storage limit.

    • Shared Pool: Backups will now compete for the same 15 GB of free storage (or paid Google One storage) shared across Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos.

    • 45-Day Transition Window: Existing users receive an email notice giving a 45-day heads-up before the revised accounting applies to their account.

    • Small Average Impact: According to Google, the average Android backup relies on relatively lightweight data, meaning the policy update is expected to increase storage usage by only ~40 MB on average.

What Happens If You Exceed Your Storage Limit?

If your Google Account goes over its allocated storage cap, automatic device backups will automatically pause. They will remain paused until space is freed up or a larger storage tier is purchased.

(Note: Running out of space also impacts your ability to receive new emails in Gmail or save new files in Drive/Photos).

    New Granular Backup Controls

To balance the new storage requirements, Google is adding more detailed backup management settings directly inside Android. These allow control over what gets backed up:

    • Individual App Toggles: Choose specific apps to back up while skipping heavy or non-essential ones.

    • Data Type Switches: Selectively toggle off backups for categories like Call History, SMS/MMS Messages, or Device Settings.

    • Personalized Estimates: Notification emails and storage settings now display personalized estimates showing exactly how much extra storage the backup will consume.

    Google One Storage Options

For users hovering close to the 15 GB mark who prefer not to delete files, Google One provides several upgrade options:

Plan Tier Storage Allocation Approximate Price
    Free Tier 15 GB ₹0
    Lite 30 GB ~₹59 / month
    Basic 100 GB ~₹130 / month
    Standard 200 GB ~₹210 / month
    Premium 2 TB ~₹650 / month

    Summary of Action Steps

    1. Check Your Email: Look for the notification from Google regarding your 45-day transition window and backup size estimate.

    2. Review Backup Settings: Navigate to Settings > Accounts and backup > Google Backup on your device to toggle off apps or data types you do not need restored in the future.

    3. Audit Storage: Clear unnecessary files in Google Photos, Drive, or Gmail if you are running close to your limit.
