Tesla’s $19 Billion Shock: Wall Street Reels as AI Costs Rise and Profits Slump

A 14% crash in Tesla’s stock price on Thursday wiped roughly $19 billion from Elon Musk’s personal fortune.

The selloff was triggered by Tesla’s Q2 earnings report, which missed profit expectations for the first time in over two years—leaving investors rattled by surging costs and a pivot away from core EV manufacturing.

Key Drivers Behind the Market Panic

    1. Severe Cash Burn & Massive AI Capex

Wall Street was blindsided by Tesla’s capital expenditures doubling YoY to $5.8 billion in Q2. This heavy spending on artificial intelligence, robotaxis, and humanoid robots pushed the company’s free cash flow into negative territory at -$1.1 billion (far worse than the anticipated $3.3 billion positive cash flow). While Musk reassured investors that the $25B+ full-year capex plan would yield “incredible returns,” the market reacted defensively to the immediate cash drain.

    2. Margin Squeeze & EV Revenue Pressures

Despite reporting record overall vehicle deliveries:

    • Lower Average Selling Prices (ASPs): Continued price cuts across key models squeezed operating margins.

    • Dwindling Regulatory Credits: Sales of high-margin regulatory credits dropped, leaving bottom-line profits exposed to higher operating costs.

    3. Skepticism Over AI and Autonomous Pivots

Investors are increasingly uneasy about Tesla shifting its core focus from high-volume automobile production to speculative AI and physical robotics. Analysts are calling for tangible financial returns on projects like unsupervised Robotaxis and the Optimus humanoid robot rather than elevated spending with long timelines.

    4. Broad-Based “Big Tech” AI Fatigue

The selloff wasn’t exclusive to Tesla. A broader market sentiment shift saw tech investors demanding clear profitability from heavy AI investments, which dragged down other tech giants (such as Alphabet) on the same day.

    The Bottom Line

Wall Street remains divided: while long-term believers back Musk’s transition into a robotics/AI powerhouse, short-term investors are spooked by shrinking profit margins, high cash burn, and the lack of immediate financial payback from non-automotive bets.
