British asset manager Aberdeen Group disclosed net outflows of £3 billion ($4 billion) in the first half of the year, missing analyst forecasts of a modest inflow and underscoring the challenges facing its ongoing restructuring.

The negative flows represent a steep rise from the £900 million in outflows logged during the same period last year. Shares of Aberdeen dropped 7% in early trading following the news, trimming some of its 21% year-to-date gains.

    Key Financial Highlights

    • Net Outflows: £3 billion total net client withdrawals for H1.

    • Assets Under Management (AUM): Stood at £579.4 billion.

    • Adjusted Operating Profit: Rose 21% to £151 million, slightly beating market expectations.

    • Interactive Investor Growth: Aberdeen’s retail platform attracted record net inflows of £6.8 billion, partially offsetting large institutional and adviser withdrawals.

    Operational Strategy & Leadership Moves

    • Institutional & Adviser Drag: While retail inflows via interactive investor were strong, larger institutional clients continued to consolidate investment managers and pull capital from the firm’s investment and adviser divisions.

    • New Division Leadership: Aberdeen appointed Rich Denning (formerly of M&G) to head its struggling adviser division.

    • Cost Controls & Index Re-entry: CEO Jason Windsor’s cost-cutting program previously bolstered performance enough to help the firm regain its spot in the FTSE 100 index.

    • Macro Concerns: Management noted that it is assessing portfolio risks tied to Middle East tensions, oil supply volatility, and lingering inflation pressures.
