India’s generative artificial intelligence market is witnessing a high-stakes shift in user dominance. While OpenAI’s ChatGPT long held an unshakeable lead across mobile platforms, latest Q2 2026 data from Sensor Tower reveals a rapidly re-shaping landscape: Anthropic’s Claude is experiencing explosive revenue growth, while Google’s Gemini is rapidly gaining ground in user engagement.

    Claude’s Multi-Fold Explosion

Anthropic’s focused strategy on developer workflows and long-context capabilities has paid off handsomely in the Indian tech ecosystem. Claude’s mobile app downloads in India surged over 30-fold year-on-year to hit 8.5 million in the second quarter.

Crucially, user conversion to paid subscriptions has tracked this expansion. In-app consumer spending on Claude jumped nearly 19-fold year-on-year, reaching ₹62.2 crore—establishing Anthropic as a serious monetization competitor in the region.

    Gemini’s Engagement Surge

Google’s deep ecosystem integration across Android hardware and enterprise tools has driven substantial adoption for Gemini. Downloads for the app doubled year-on-year to 18.1 million during Q2.

More importantly, user retention metrics highlight a major shift in daily usage habits:

    • Time-Spent Market Share: Gemini’s share of total minutes spent on AI applications in India climbed to 18.7%, up significantly from just 4.9% during the same period last year.

    • Feature Integration: Enhanced multi-modal capabilities and localized language support have accelerated everyday utility among students, professionals, and creators.

    ChatGPT Retains Monetization Crown

Despite aggressive competition from rival models, OpenAI’s ChatGPT remains the absolute revenue leader in the domestic market.

Driven by strong enterprise adoption and legacy subscription plans, ChatGPT generated ₹112.8 crore in Indian consumer spending during Q2 2026—a steady 36% increase year-on-year. While its relative market share of downloads has faced pressure from rapid competitors, its monetization conversion rates continue to set the industry benchmark.

    Q2 2026 Performance Comparison

Metric ChatGPT (OpenAI) Gemini (Google) Claude (Anthropic)
Q2 Consumer Spending ₹112.8 Crore (Top Revenue) Growing ₹62.2 Crore (19x YoY Increase)
Q2 App Downloads High Baseline 18.1 Million (2x YoY Increase) 8.5 Million (30x YoY Increase)
Engagement Share Leading Overall 18.7% (up from 4.9%) Surging among developers

    Looking Ahead

The figures reflect a broader evolution in how Indian consumers and enterprise users interact with AI platforms. The initial market phase—defined primarily by casual trial of ChatGPT—has transitioned into a multi-polar environment. As developers migrate toward specialized tools like Claude and mainstream mobile users embrace Gemini’s native Android integration, the battle for India’s 800+ million internet users is entering its most competitive phase yet.
