OpenAI Ends Model Access for Cursor Following Acquisition by Elon Musk’s SpaceX

OpenAI announced it will terminate its long-standing partnership with AI-coding assistant Cursor following the tool’s acquisition by SpaceX. The decision marks another escalation in the rivalry between OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and SpaceX founder Elon Musk.

OpenAI notified SpaceX on August 28, 2026, triggering a 76-day notice period that sets November 12, 2026, as the final shutoff date for direct model access through Cursor.

Key Drivers Behind the Contract Termination

    • Lack of Trust & Terms Violations: OpenAI cited past breach-of-contract incidents with Musk’s ventures—including X (formerly Twitter) and xAI—as the primary reason for ending access. In its official statement, OpenAI noted it could not be confident SpaceX would adhere to its terms of service.

    • Contractual Trigger: The all-stock buyout of Anysphere (the startup behind Cursor) by SpaceX triggered a clause allowing OpenAI to pull its proprietary models from the platform.

    • Admitted Breaches: OpenAI referenced testimony from earlier this year where Musk admitted that xAI had violated OpenAI’s terms of service regarding model integration and usage.

    Industry Impact & Responses

    • Impact on Developers: Cursor will not receive future OpenAI model contracts, affecting software developers who rely on OpenAI models within the Cursor editor interface.

    • Cursor’s Stance: Michael Truell, co-founder of Cursor and now a SpaceX executive, expressed disappointment on X (formerly Twitter), highlighting that Cursor was among OpenAI’s earliest adopters and viewed the platform as neutral infrastructure.

    • Ongoing Legal Feud: The fallout comes against the backdrop of an ongoing $150 billion lawsuit filed by Musk against OpenAI and Altman over the company’s shift away from its original non-profit mission.
