India Inc is undergoing a profound structural transition, marked by the departure or planned exit of several towering corporate figures who have steered the country’s largest institutions through periods of massive growth, modernization, and consolidation. From titan conglomerates and privatized aviation giants to banking and tech heavyweights, executive suites are bracing for a generational handover.

The Air India Transition and Campbell Wilson’s Exit

Among the most closely tracked developments is the leadership evolution at Air India. Having taken up perhaps the most challenging corporate brief in modern Indian aviation following the Tata Group’s acquisition, CEO Campbell Wilson announced his departure. Tasked with steering a monumental turnaround, Wilson oversaw massive milestones, including historic fleet orders exceeding 500 aircraft and the complex merger with Vistara. However, mounting operational pressures, integration hurdles, and the heavy toll of legacy issues paved the way for his exit roadmap. With Wilson stepping down, Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran has taken direct oversight alongside an interim oversight committee while the search for a permanent successor continues.

Pivotal Shifts at the Top of Conglomerates and Banks

The executive shuffle extends well beyond aviation. Discussions surrounding leadership continuity and tenure horizons at the apex of salt-to-software conglomerate Tata Sons—involving long-time Chairman N. Chandrasekaran—have captured the undivided attention of corporate governance watchers.

Simultaneously, across banking, consumer goods, and digital infrastructure, several key chief executives and managing directors are approaching the ends of their legacy tenures or moving on to new horizons. These transitions reflect a broader evolution across India’s corporate landscape, as boards look toward fresh leadership blood to navigate tightening global regulations, rapid digital disruptions, and shifting consumer markets.

As these foundational leaders step down throughout 2026, India Inc stands at a crucial crossroads, setting the stage for a new generation of executives to define the next chapter of corporate expansion.
