U.S. Federal Reserve Raises Rates by 25 Basis Points, Signals Further Tightening

In a decisive move to combat stubbornly high inflation, the U.S. Federal Reserve’s Federal Open Market Committee voted unanimously to raise benchmark interest rates by 25 basis points to a range of 3.75% to 4.00%. The adjustment marks the Fed’s first rate increase since 2023.

    Key Highlights & Economic Context

    • The Inflation Battle: With August’s consumer price index remaining elevated at 3.4%—comfortably above the central bank’s long-term 2% target—policymakers emphasized that the hike is necessary to ensure a “timelier return” to price stability and prevent inflation from becoming deeply embedded in consumer and firm behavior.

    • More Hikes on the Horizon: According to the updated Summary of Economic Projections (SEP), a majority of Fed policymakers anticipate at least one additional rate hike before the end of the year. The Fed also revised its year-end Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) inflation forecast up to 3.7%, while lifting its GDP growth projection to 2.3%.

    • Political Pressures: The rate hike arrives despite intense pressure from President Donald Trump, who has consistently pushed for lower interest rates to drive economic activity. The decision follows a tense political climate surrounding the central bank, which includes past friction over leadership and ongoing tensions regarding the Fed’s independent mandate to balance maximum employment with stable prices.
