An early morning blaze at a major New Delhi data centre has caused “extensive damage” to server infrastructure, leaving several high-profile corporate clients facing critical data losses. The affected facility is operated by STT Global Data Centres India, a prominent joint venture between Singapore’s ST Telemedia and India’s Tata Communications.

    Extent of the Damage

While Tata Communications activated its business continuity protocols immediately following the fire on June 5, internal letters seen by Reuters reveal a much more challenging recovery environment than initially reported. Television news footage from inside the server rooms showed collapsed ceiling panels, scattered debris, and completely incinerated server racks and electrical infrastructure.

    Widespread Technical & Corporate Fallout

The structural destruction has directly translated into major operational disruptions across the digital ecosystem:

    • Two Decades of Data Vaporized: Telecommunications client Matrix Cellular, a prominent provider of international SIM cards, reported that it is aggressively struggling to recover up to twenty years of invaluable historical customer data lost in the blaze.

    • Google Cloud Disruptions: A source with direct knowledge of the matter confirmed that recent intermittent network disruptions experienced by Google Cloud users across India are linked directly to the physical destruction inside this specific facility.

    Incident Detail Status / Impact
Facility Operators ST Telemedia (Singapore) & Tata Communications (India)
    Incident Date June 5
Current Status Critical infrastructure ruined; data recovery remains heavily compromised
Major Casualties Matrix Cellular (20 years of data lost); Google Cloud India (intermittent outages)
