India and New Zealand Elevate Ties to Strategic Partnership with ₹35,000 Crore Trade Target

In a historic geopolitical milestone, India and New Zealand officially elevated their bilateral relations to a formal Strategic Partnership on Saturday, July 11, 2026. The announcement came during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s high-profile visit to Auckland—marking the first time an Indian Prime Minister has set foot in New Zealand in 40 years.

New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon hailed the meeting as “historic,” noting that the newly formed framework marks a significant leap forward that will expand diplomatic, defense, and economic ties far beyond the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) signed by the two nations earlier this year in April.

    Expanding Beyond Free Trade

While the recently signed FTA serves as a massive economic foundation—immediately eliminating tariffs on 57% of New Zealand’s exports to India—both leaders emphasized that the new Strategic Partnership is designed to broaden the relationship into a long-term geopolitical alliance.

During extensive delegation-level talks at the Government House in Auckland, Modi and Luxon formally endorsed a “Roadmap to 2030.” This bilateral blueprint sets an ambitious five-year target to double annual two-way trade in goods and services to 7 billion New Zealand dollars, which is approximately ₹35,000 crore, by the year 2030.

    Tighter Defense and Maritime Integration

A core driver of the new partnership is enhanced security cooperation across the Indo-Pacific, a move that comes amid growing regional anxieties over maritime assertiveness. The summit successfully yielded 18 concrete outcomes, including 10 formal agreements.

Most notably, India and New Zealand solidified a reciprocal logistics support pact between the Indian Navy and the New Zealand Defence Force. The two nations have also agreed to establish a permanent Maritime Security Dialogue to streamline information exchange, coordinate joint naval exercises, and defend freedom of navigation in accordance with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

Speaking in Hindi during the joint press brief, Prime Minister Modi highlighted the natural synergy between the two democracies, noting that as two maritime nations, close cooperation lends new strength to the Indo-Pacific, and their ties can infuse fresh energy into achieving shared goals of peace. He emphasized that a firm belief in democratic values makes the two nations natural partners.

    Cultural Honors and Diaspora Engagement

The day began with a traditional Māori pōwhiri ceremonial welcome at the Government House, reflecting New Zealand’s rich indigenous heritage. Prime Minister Modi was also accorded an official Guard of Honour before diving into a packed schedule that included touring a New Zealand sports innovation showcase alongside Kiwi athletes and meeting with top corporate executives to pitch digital transformation and agricultural partnerships.

The final leg of PM Modi’s three-nation tour—which previously took him to Indonesia and Australia—will culminate in a massive community address at Auckland’s Spark Arena, where up to 10,000 members of the 300,000-strong Indian diaspora are expected to gather to celebrate the deepening ties between the two nations.
