Mainland China and Hong Kong stocks moved higher on Tuesday, propelled by strong gains in artificial intelligence shares following agreements between the US and China to continue discussions on AI safety. At the same time, global investors are keeping a close watch on upcoming policy signals from Beijing and Chinese President Xi Jinping’s high-profile state visit to the United States.

    🇨🇳 Market Performance Across Indexes

    • Shanghai Composite: Up 0.2% at midday.

    • CSI300 Index: Gained 0.5%.

    • Shenzhen Index & ChiNext Composite: Advanced 0.5% and 0.9% respectively.

    • STAR50 Index: Climbed 1.3%, led by a strong 2.3% surge in AI-related sub-indexes.

    • Hong Kong Markets: The Hang Seng Index rose 0.4%, while the Hang Seng Tech Index gained 1%. Notably, Alibaba shares hit a one-month high after CEO Eddie Wu announced plans to expand global cloud data-centre capacity to over 20 gigawatts by 2032.

🤝 US-China AI Talks and Diplomatic Focus

The positive momentum follows announcements by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Monday. Senior US and Chinese officials have agreed to reconvene in Shenzhen in approximately two months to discuss artificial intelligence risks and establish communication frameworks for potential AI safety incidents.

Bessent also struck an optimistic tone regarding the bilateral trade relationship ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit to the US from September 23 to 25 at the invitation of US President Donald Trump. While investors are adopting a measured view, attention remains locked on the symbolic potential of the meeting to build cooperative frameworks between the world’s two largest economies.
