Chinese Equities End Subdued as Tech Pullback Offsets Defensives; Hong Kong Slips Amid Global Risks

Chinese stock markets remained range-bound on Tuesday as cautious investors balanced gains in defensive sectors against a sharp pullback in technology shares.

    Market Performance and Sector Divergence

    • Mainland Markets: By the midday break, the Shanghai Composite held nearly flat at 3,987.56 (+0.03%), while the blue-chip CSI300 index slipped 0.06%.

    • Tech Sell-Off: Technology shares faced heavy selling pressure. The ChiNext Composite dropped 0.9%, the STAR50 Index fell 1.5%, and the CSI Semiconductor Index declined 2%.

    • Defensive Support: Losses in tech were cushioned by buying in traditional and defensive segments, led by a 2.7% jump in the CSI Liquor Index, a 1.6% rise in consumer staples, and a 1.1% gain in the CSI Banks Index.

Hong Kong Markets and Global Headwinds

Hong Kong equities faced sharper losses, with the benchmark Hang Seng Index falling 1% to 25,310.88 and the Hang Seng Tech Index declining 0.8%. Investor sentiment was further dampened by the tepid market debut of fast-fashion giant Shein, whose shares tumbled 8% amid lingering regulatory and valuation concerns.

Broader sentiment across Asian markets remained risk-off, pressured by rising global bond yields, heightened geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, and crude oil prices surging above $90 a barrel. Analysts note that with few immediate domestic economic catalysts in sight, investors are likely to maintain a cautious stance, favoring defensive positioning over high-growth assets.
