India has emerged as the most attractive data centre market in the Asia-Pacific region (outside China), scoring 73 in BloombergNEF’s assessment—ahead of Indonesia (68), Japan (63), and Singapore (62). Driven by strong energy availability, land, and subsea fibre connectivity, India’s live IT capacity reached 1.7 gigawatts (GW), with another 1.3 GW under construction and 3.2 GW in planned projects.

Key Data Centre Metrics & Market Landscape

Metric / Category Details & Projections
Live IT Capacity 1.7 GW (4x increase over the past six years)
Pipeline Capacity 1.3 GW under construction; 3.2 GW land/power-permitted
Leading State Hub Maharashtra (accounts for 55% of live IT capacity)
Emerging Regional Hubs Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh
Projected Electricity Use Surging from 11 TWh (2025) to 91 TWh by 2035 (BloombergNEF ETS)

    Major Corporate Investment Commitments

    • Domestic Conglomerates ($210 Billion Total):

      • Reliance Industries & Adani Group: Account for 45% of all announced data centre investments in India, with 95% directed toward large hyperscale AI campuses.

      • Key Project Spotlight: Reliance Industries is investing ₹1.6 lakh crore (~$17 billion) to build a 1.5 GW AI-focused data centre cluster in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, backed by captive solar and battery storage (Phase 1: 500 MW by October 2028).

    • Global Tech Hyperscalers ($84 Billion Total):

      • Google, Amazon, and Microsoft have collectively announced $84 billion in Indian cloud and AI infrastructure expansion.

    Infrastructure & Operational Challenges

    • Power & Transmission Bottlenecks: Annual power consumption by data centres will grow more than eightfold by 2035. While installed generation capacity has grown at a 7.1% CAGR since 2021, power transmission grid expansion must keep pace to handle localized hyperscale power loads.

    • Cooling & Water Stress: Although most current facilities rely on air cooling, high-density AI workloads moving toward water-intensive liquid cooling could strain municipal water resources in cities like Bengaluru and Chennai.
