Shapoor Mistry, chairman of the Shapoorji Pallonji (SP) Group, has proposed a structured monetization plan to raise approximately ₹25,000 crore over the next 24 months by offloading a portion of the group’s holding in Tata Sons. Mistry has forwarded the proposal to Tata Trusts Chairman Noel Tata as both conglomerates look for ways to resolve liquidity needs while navigating regulatory and structural complexities.
-
Stake Monetisation Target: The SP Group, which holds an estimated 18.37% stake in unlisted Tata Sons, is looking to monetize roughly 7% of its holding to ease severe financial pressures.
-
Debt and Refinancing Pressures: The move follows a massive ₹21,500 crore refinancing completed by the SP Group in July, which carries high borrowing costs (18–19%). With substantial debt repayments due, lenders are aggressively pushing for tangible progress on stake monetization.
-
Preserving Private Status: Unlike previous discussions favoring an outright public listing to unlock value, the new cash-payout or buyback proposal aims to provide the SP Group with definitive cash flows over time while enabling Tata Sons to retain its private company structure—a priority for Noel Tata.
