ET World Leaders Forum: Calling India ‘China+1’ is ‘Intellectually Lazy’, Says Kumar Mangalam Birla, Envisions Growth Engine Role for the Country

Speaking at the ET World Leaders Forum, Aditya Birla Group Chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla criticized the common baseline used to describe India’s economic potential, stating that labeling the nation as merely a “China+1” alternative is “intellectually lazy.”

Instead, Birla urged global business leaders and policymakers to adopt a “World+1” model, arguing that India has established its own track record, scale, and strategic positioning to serve as an independent primary growth engine for the global economy.

    Key Takeaways from the Address

    • Beyond “China+1”: Birla emphasized that while “China+1” acts as a convenient shorthand for supply chain diversification, it drastically underestimates India’s standalone capabilities, domestic consumer base, and industrial momentum.

    • A Global Growth Engine: Rather than being viewed simply as a backup destination for manufacturing, India should be approached as a distinct global hub capable of powering broader international economic activity.

    • Corporate Resilience Amid Stress: Reframing how companies navigate ongoing geopolitical shifts, Birla noted that global businesses have developed stronger “shock absorbers” over the past few years to handle market volatility and changing trade dynamics.

    • Positive Investment Climate: Highlighting the ease of doing business in India, he pointed to key structural reforms—such as digital infrastructure rollout, tax reforms, and financialization—as major catalysts driving domestic capital expenditure (capex) at a rapid pace.
